Postdoctoral Position in Experimental Nuclear Astrophysics

We are seeking applications for a two-year postdoctoral position starting in November 2026.

The successful candidate will support and help develop the mass and half-life measurement programme for nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics at the Rare-RI Ring (R3) at RIBF, RIKEN, and will be based at RIKEN, Japan. The position is funded by MPIK Heidelberg and is part of a vibrant international collaboration between Surrey, Heidelberg-GSI, and RIKEN.

The role will include:

  • Commissioning and carrying out the first science experiments using the non-destructive Schottky detector at the R3 storage ring.
  • Developing detectors and related instrumentation for the R3 storage ring.
  • Supporting, coordinating, and leading experimental campaigns at R3.
  • Analysing experimental data and contributing to the scientific interpretation and dissemination of results.
  • Assisting with the mentoring of MPhys and PhD students.

The successful candidate will also be encouraged to contribute to other aspects of the group's research programme, including experiments at the ESR and CRYRING storage rings at GSI and detector research and development activities at the University of Surrey and MPIK Heidelberg.

Applicants should have:

  • A PhD in experimental nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics, or a closely related field (or be close to completing one).
  • Experience with experimental nuclear physics techniques and data analysis.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
