Researcher in Experimental Nuclear Physics
The Nuclear Spectroscopy Department at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt, Germany, invites applications for a Researcher position in experimental nuclear physics within the HISPEC/DESPEC collaboration. This collaboration is a central component of the NUSTAR (NUclear STructure, Astrophysics, and Reactions) program, one of the four scientific pillars of the upcoming FAIR facility, which is currently entering its commissioning phase.
About the Role:
The successful candidate will benefit from the chance to lead and take part in experimental physics research of the HISPEC/DESPEC project at one of the foremost accelerator facilities worldwide, taking on strategic responsibilities in the setup, operation, and coordination of experiments. Their strong contribution to data analysis, student supervision, and the dissemination of scientific results is expected to advance our understanding of nuclear shape evolution and shell structure far from stability. This position offers the opportunity to strengthen the physics scope of the local group and enhance its visibility in an international context.
GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung is a leading center for heavy-ion research, hosting a unique large-scale accelerator facility. The upcoming FAIR facility will enable unprecedented experiments to explore the structure of matter and the evolution of the universe. The HISPEC/DESPEC collaboration focuses on γ-ray based nuclear spectroscopy of fast radioactive ion beams, aiming to investigate nuclear structure and astrophysical processes through the detection of decay radiation from exotic nuclei. DESPEC experiments are currently being conducted at the existing GSI facility as part of FAIR Phase-0, utilizing the FRagment Separator (FRS) and an advanced detector setup. From 2028 the HISPEC/DESPEC project will move to the FAIR site to explore new frontiers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Development of HISPEC/DESPEC detector systems
- Execution of HISPEC/DESPEC experiments at GSI/FAIR, and other related laboratories
- Supervision and coordination of the local research team
- Presentation of results and group activities at international conferences and workshops
- Publication of scientific findings in peer-reviewed journals
- Active participation in the ongoing scientific work and collaboration efforts of the research group
