Open-Rank Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Experimental Nuclear or High Energy Physics
Position Overview
The Department of Physics at The Ohio State University announces an opening for a tenure-track faculty position for an experimental particle or nuclear physicist whose research focuses on the intersection of astrophysics and either particle or nuclear physics. The open rank appointment, with the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor title depending on qualifications, will start in Autumn 2027. A non-exhaustive list of possible topics at this intersection includes dark matter, neutrinos and neutrino astronomy, cosmic rays and gamma rays, multi-messenger astrophysics, gravitational waves, and nuclear astrophysics. The Ohio State University has a strong and impactful record of innovative research in experimental particle and nuclear physics in both detector development and data analysis. Ohio State faculty play leading roles in current and future accelerator-based particle and nuclear experiments including CMS, ATLAS, milliQan, SUBMET, FORMOSA at the FPF, NOvA, DUNE, STAR, and ePIC; in ANITA, ARA, PUEO, and RNO-G for ultra-high-energy neutrinos and cosmic rays; in the DESI, Roman Space Telescope, and Rubin DESC cosmology programs; and in SDSS, ASAS-SN, and the Large Binocular Telescope via the Department of Astronomy, whose Imaging Sciences Laboratory builds astronomical instrumentation. The successful candidate will help connect these efforts. The candidate will also work to advance the Department’s mission in research, teaching, and service and is anticipated to become a member of the Ohio State Center for Cosmology and AstroParticle Physics (CCAPP), a center of excellence consisting of 25 faculty members from the Department of Physics and Department of Astronomy, together with approximately 20 postdoctoral fellows and 25 graduate students.
Performance Objectives
Applicants should demonstrate the potential to be a recognized leader in experimental high energy or nuclear physics, who will develop a productive, well-funded, and internationally prominent research program. Successful candidates will be expected to:
- foster cross-disciplinary research with sustained impact;
- develop and maintain an extramurally funded research program;
- have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring; and
- contribute to the teaching (graduate and undergraduate) and service missions of the University.
